This is an enjoyable read. It is a cross between Janet Evanovich / Stephanie Bond style tales and the older Private Eye books written by authors such as John D. McDonald, Carter Brown and Richard Prather.
Given that difference some female readers may be offended by the main characters drinking (she certainly seems to down a lot of scotch) and a couple of sidetracks in the story with some female/female sex that doesn't seem to lend anything to the story.
There are a few typos involving verb tense and shortly into the book the first several words at the start of the chapter are in all caps.
Other than that the book is well written well paced and keeps your attention. The characters are well developed. Interestingly the author has created three categories of characters the good, the bad and the bad but with code of conduct. To say more would spoil the story for you.
It is not a cozy and not really humorous in a Stephanie Plum type way but the author has a light touch and a readable style. A for romantic there are some sexual situations involving the main characters and her friends I don't know that I would call it romantic. It really feels like one of the old PI novels. I would class as a Light Mystery with some interesting characters that shows promise for future adventures of Ms. Black and her cohorts.
I can find very little about this author and my assumption is that this is a pen name for an experienced author possibly in another genre. The only reason I didn't give it five stars are the minor problems listed above.
I gave it only three stars because it's such a knockoff of the Stephanie Plum series. Lacks the panach of Evanovich's writing.
This book started fast and never looked back! I really enjoyed the writing style, all characters well developed and both endearing and a bit risqué with witty dialogue. Great Book, fun to read, definitely recommend!
This was a mystery with lots of humor mixed in. It's nice to read a book that isn't so heavy with depressing drama but the drama in this book works. I would definitely recommend the Laura Black series.
Scottsdale Heat easily allows the reader to escape into the world of Laura Black. The detail provided by the author allows the reader to feel as if they are part of the adventure and captivates from beginning to end. I would hire Laura Black to solve any of my mysteries. I can't wait to see what she gets herself involved in next. Bring on Laura Black Mysteries #2.
Scottsdale Heat was a wonderful quick read.
Laura Black is a wonderful character who sort of reminds me of Stephanie Plum. I just love a strong female lead who gets herself into crazy situations only to have a hot guy come to her rescue.
This is a must read. I can't wait to read more from this wonderful author. Give this book a try.
Absolutely the best mystery I've read in quite awhile. Glad I came across this one. I'm happy to say Laura Black is not a ditzy investigator, but she does seem to get shot at. Definitely recommend this book, and most likely the series. I will be reading the next book in the series.
