I really appreciate Marshall's history book for elementary schoolers. I had ordered this book specifically because of the size - I thought bigger would be better. But I am disappointed. The text covers the entire page. there is about a quarter inch margin around the top and sides of the page. The text is one solid block of left justified text. 9.5 inches worth!! There are no paragraph breaks, and no images. It's a terrible format for anyone to read, especially so with a not so excited reader. It's very frustrating when there are no images of the inside of the book!! So be warned....Product details

This edition is not the best, typos and errors make it annoying to read at times. But the content is great, perfect for teaching history to a middle school student.
i LOOOOOOOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!
its a great way to learn us history.
I cant tell you how much I loved this book.
Your just gonna have yourself.😋
This Yesterday's Classic is an easy way to pick up the history of the U.S.A.. It's not laden with dates and history buff details but there's enough to get the big picture. Me and my homeschooled kids (9 and 10) are engaged. The chapters are not over long either.
Written well to accommodate young children and yet still get lots of information in. Found this through amble side online. Great free home schooling curriculum that suggests a bunch of books like these. Would buy again!
We used this for homeschooling per our curriculum. I liked the way the information was presented. Some of the chapters are more dry than others. When the book starts introducing presidents, I would suggest doing a notebook about each one. The chapters present history as it happened during each presidency. I wish I would've thought to do this earlier.
As an adult history buff, I picked up the 99 cent edition as a curiosity, but I found the book to be a surprisingly good read. not just an oddity or a historical relic itself. I wouldn't recommend it as *the* one history of America for a modern-day reader (child or adult) to read, but it has virtues that many more current books, especially textbooks, lack. It treats history as a *story* (or series of stories), something that kids (and adults) might actually get interested in, not a collection of dry and seemingly useless facts. It treats American history in a basically positive manner, rather than as a politically correct chronicle of crimes against humanity (though it takes some note of historical controversies, and doesn't suggest that the U.S. has been 100% right about everything all the time). And while "written down" to a certain extent for young readers of the early 20th century, it's certainly not "dumbed down" to the extent that modern textbooks are reported to be.
One slight anomaly is that while this is indicated to be a history of the United States of America, almost half the book is devoted to pre-Revolutionary North American history-- and not just the British colonies, but European explorers going back to the Vikings, and the Spanish, French and Dutch colonies. This is not a bad thing, however... I actually learned things from this early part of the book (or at least came across some interesting stories I hadn't encountered before) whereas the part dealing with actual U.S. history covered material I'm already mostly familar with.
As I said, I wouldn't advise anyone to seek their whole knowledge of American history from this book. Besides cutting off at the end of World War I, it obviously, as someone noted, lacks the benefit of recent historical research and findings. And while I'm not an apostle of political correctness, still it's undeniable that the treatment here of American Indians and African-Americans is pretty patronizing. But this is certainly worth looking at as a supplement to moe modern treatments of American history.
We use this as our grade 4 through 6 history spine. I purchased the kindle version last year and the hard copy this year. I like both for different reasons. Obviously the kindle version is highly portable, lol, we use it when we are on the go or traveling/ vacationing. However, for us there is nothing like an actual book and I think my son is happier reading off paper rather than a screen. The writing itself is some of the best quality history literature ever and I would highly recommend this kind of history literature over the textbook style.
