A captured Raider officer, eager to secure his freedom, informs Space Command Intelligence of a planned attack on a convoy by a massive Raider armada. An effective spotter network and intelligence system usually allows the pirates to avoid SC warships, so for the first time in Galactic Alliance history, a task force of Space Command warships might have an opportunity to engage a fleet of pirate ships in mortal combat.

The Space Command Admiral at Higgins SCB pulls out all stops to surreptitiously assemble a force of ten ships, the most that can be secretly diverted, to face off against the Raider ambushers. One of those ships happens to be the Prometheus. Jenetta Carver, the newest Lt. Commander in Space Command, on her way to Earth for a medal ceremony for acts of outstanding valor, finds herself again caught up in a life or death situation. The Prometheus arrives at the rendezvous point, a month from Higgins SC Base, to await the arrival of the other ships, and a call for help from the convoy.

Only two other ships have reached the RP when the convoy is attacked. Captain Gavin of the Prometheus, in his capacity as task force commander, decides that they can’t wait for the others, so the three SC warships race off to face a Raider warship force they expect will number forty plus.

I'll start of by saying that yeah, you should go read this book. If you THINK it might interest you, then you are almost certainly the type of reader who really WILL enjoy this book, otherwise, you wouldn't even be here. But if you haven't read the first one in the series, then I recommend you start there.

Having recommended it, I must make some qualifications:

The author is an exceptional storyteller, but certainly not a great writer. He makes some minor and even major mistakes in his writing, but the value of the story still shines through.

Some examples of his problems as a writer?

He makes mistakes with too much exposition and he has a fondness for unimportant and unimpressive "Technobabble." For example, keeps talking about "Oh-Gee" chairs, over and over. It doesn't really matter that this is a chair mounted on a gravity field. If this is a chair people frequently use, as it seems in the story, then they would just call them Chairs. And for sure WE already understand that they are just chairs mounted on a gravity field, rather than on legs. So get on with it, okay? Ho hum.

He seems fixated on people's height. He brings up character's height over and over. Every person is identified by their height, or it comes up constantly, as in things like, "He lowered his 6 feet 2 inch frame into the chair." So freaking what. How tall people are or big people are is ONLY important if their height is somehow important to their real character or their work. For most people that really REALLY is totally unimportant. Perhaps one of the most unimportant details you can give about someone is an exact measure of their height.

Then there are times when he incoherently slips from past tense to present tense, especially when giving one of his many expository interludes. Sometimes it is very jarring.

He really seems to like the Thesaurus. I guess he thinks it makes him sound more "advanced" in some way, or perhaps that it provides authority to his writing. Wrong.

BUT, he tells a great story and it's fun to read. So, from my perspective, it is VERY HIGHLY recommended. Overall, this is shaping up to be a wonderful series of books. I just wish he could write better, so he wouldn't keep knocking me out of the story.

Valor At Vauzlee A Galaxy Unknown Book 2 eBook Thomas DePrima Reviews

I have been reading Sci-Fi for over 35 years. Started with the masters like Bova, Parnell, Heinlien, and have progressed to writers like Campbell and Ringo.

Then I found Thomas DePrima (and others) who have really been some of the most entertaining writers I have followed. First let me applaud Mr. DePrima in his ability to get 8 books that are ALL enjoyable to read and have very little disconnect between them. Too many authors have a good beginning book and a good ending book but all the ones in between are full of rambling tales that don't really add to the books continuity. They also usually 'skimp' in the middle books (average book length 380 pages...middle books 220 pages)..But, not Mr. DePrima. He usually holds the same or more book length. Which I appreciate greatly !!

The series itself is a page turner.
Cons (not many)
There are some some side stories that take up too many words but you get 'why' they're there. They also are mentioned in later books (some authors trot out teaser trips in earlier books but never use them later..DePrima does). As Jen Carver works her way through Space Command anyone who was in the real military will snicker..but hey..it's a story! The SC may not be like the real Navy. Aliens seem like their all from another state not another race (very human reactions).

Pro's
Excellent series with great continuity over 8 books. Rich characters with involved backgrounds and their own agendas. There are several characters/story lines that could easily be spun off into detailed stories of their own. Ship detail and description is very good without being too 'techy'. Aliens are very humanlike but are not center of story. Plot moves you along quickly even though the books are all full length. CHEAP ($6 per kindle book). Author is very active on .

This is a great serialized story that can be read by teens to seniors. Not overly adult in tone or story (good vs. bad). Technical details inform without boring or confusing.

Go read them all !!
"Valor At Vauzlee" is the second book in the "Galaxy Unknown" series by Thomas DePrima featuring Jenetta Carver as the main character. The several books are a space opera and are better read in order, but each is independent of the others.

Carver starts as an ensign in the Space Command of the Galactic Alliance and progresses upward through the officer ranks in the books. All the characters are well defined and show growth and maturity through the series. The descriptions are excellent and the story is a fast-paced shoot-'em-up with two major battles, the escape from a Raider (the bad guys) satellite space station, the station's destruction and the recovery of two space command battleships. There is also a trial at the end. And Jenetta is promoted.

I consider all the books to be exceptional. When I start a book that turns out to be really good, I find myself reading faster and faster to see what happens. I skim for the story and gloss over the details. A few days after I finish, I go back and read it again for the details. I think I have read these books at least 4 times each. It took me that long to slow down and really enjoy all the details. I imagine most of you don't read this way, but it's my thing. As someone stated, maybe it was the author, the books are sort of like C. S. Forester's "Horatio Hornblower" saga set in space with a female as the lead character.

You can't go wrong with "The Galaxy Unknown" series. Each one is an outstanding read that, if you like the space opera genre, you won't be able to put down.
